George Shearing's musical legacy reaches back some 70 years, yet his new recordings, notably 'Like Fine Wine', his most recent for Mack Avenue Records, resonate with the same quiet intensity that has infused his career since its beginnings.
The fourteen songs that make up the particular body of work that is 'Like Fine Wine' are performed in a trio setting, and feature Neil Swainson on bass and Reg Schwager on guitar. Although he has over 300 compositions to his credit and is as venerated a composer as he is a performer, on this album Shearing chose to include classic tunes by John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Oscar Pettiford, and Benny Goodman, among others.
'Like Fine Wine' is being released close upon the heels of Shearing's autobiography, "Lullaby of Birdland," (Continuum Publishing) and provides a strong musical coda to the printed telling of his tale.
