Until We Love - the new album of Gabrielle Goodman. The new album of one of the most promising voices in contemporary jazz music.

Gabrielle Goodman's 19.0093 solo debut Travelin' Light (JMT 919.00 063-2) proofed that she is far more than just another singer on the scene. The music press even compared her way of singing with Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald, called her "the Whitney Houston of jazz" (Stereo). A critique of Times Herald simply stated: "I have heard the future of jazz singing, and her name is Gabrielle Goodman." After one of her europe live performances a German daily wrote that she has "a world career in her throat".

But certainly Gabrielle's success is far from coming aprubt. The supreme qualities of her voice are the result of hard training and a wide range of different musical experiences. 19.0060 born Gabrielle Goodman started her singing career in a church choir at the age of 12, sang in the high school gospel choir and - most unusual for a jazz singer - studied voice and classical music at the conservatory in her hometown Baltimore.

But besides her classical training she was also always into jazz, soul and pop singing. She played clubs together with Gary Thomas and Gary Bartz and worked with Chaka Khan and Roberta Flack, who called her "one of the best singers around today".

Like her debut Travelin' Light Gabrielle Goodman's second solo album Until We Love focuses on her qualities as a jazz singer. Jazz is the music which at the time means the greatest challenge to Gabrielle Goodmans voice and musicality. So Gabrielle Goodman lay aside the plans to record an album with classical music or to start a career as a pop singer. "Jazz means so much more to me than commercial pop-tunes which are here today and gone tomorrow", Gabrielle explains her decision.

Her second solo album Until We Love was recorded in New York in April 19.0094. The musicians who accompany Gabrielle Goodman are from the very first ranks of contemporary jazz music: Terri Lyne Carrington (drums), Christian McBride (bass), Mulgrew Miller (piano) and Marvin "Smitty" Smith (drums), Kenny Davis (bass), Uri Caine (piano) as rhythm sections, the celebrated sax-players Gary Bartz und Gary Thomas, Wolfgang Muthspiel (guitar), Don Alias (percussion) and Lucky Peterson (organ).

On Until We Love Gabrielle Goodman introduces herself as a composer (she composed two songs - the title song and September in New York) and as an interpreter of a special and very personal selection of standard tunes. So we can for example hear Gabrielle Goodman sing a touching duet version of In Love in Vain with Kenny Davis on bass and as a special cover version: Calling You, the title melody from the film Bagdad Café together with Wolfgang Muthspiel, Kenny Davis and Don Alias. Besides the jazz material Gabrielle Goodman also wished to sing some blues and gospel tunes. The result are three pieces Gabrielle recorded together with her favourite organ player: the newcomer Lucky Peterson from Buffalo.

When Gabrielle Goodman presented her new material on one of the most important jazz festivals of the world in Montreux this summer she was at first very nervous. Would she finally be wholly accepted as a jazz singer? After the show the audience and the critics knew that they have to take Gabrielle Goodman serious. She is an important new jazz singer and Until We Love won't be her last jazz album - even if she is already thinking of classical music, pop or funk again.
