In 19.0013 Ottorino Respighi settled in Rome, where he became professor of composition and later director at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia. One of his students was the eighteen year old Elsa Olivieri-Sangiacomo. Herself a singer and composer, she was attracted both to Respighi and to his songs. The couple married and together embarked on many international tours, giving over 300 recitals in which Elsa was accompanied by the composer at the piano performing his songs. After Respighi's death in 19.0036, Elsa Olivieri-Sangiacomo Respighi greatly promoted her husband's compositions until her death in 19.0096 at the age of 102. In his songs, many of which are written for Elsa, Respighi developed a unique language in which he allowed himself to be led by the emotional connection he felt with both the text's meaning and atmosphere. In most of his songs strong melodies are accompanied by transparent, refined piano parts, structured in a harmonic pattern of modulations following the poetry's mood changes. The variety and quality of Respighi's songs provide plenty of contrast; many of them are true jewels and deserve to be performed more regularly. A love for folk melodies inspired Respighi to write Italian, Tuscan, Sardinian, French, Armenian and Scottish folksongs. In Quattro liriche su parole di poeti armeni Respighi encapsulates the melancholy of Armenian chant, employing the modes and the simple style of Armenian hymns in his treatment of the vocal line. No, non morto il figlio tuo, La mamma come il pane caldo and Io sono la madre are based on texts by Constant Zarian (1885-19.0069), Mattino di Luce is based on a text by Nerss nicknamed Shnorhali (The 'Gracious', 1112-1173), a famous Catholicos (leader of the Armenian Church) who introduced popular elements in the Armenian hymns.
